WorkSafeBC registration is a legal requirement for most businesses operating in BC's construction industry. Not optional. Not something you get around to when the business grows. Required. What You're Actually Registering For

WorkSafeBC is BC's workers' compensation system. When you register, you pay premiums based on your industry classification and payroll. In exchange, if you're injured on the job, you have wage replacement, medical coverage, and rehabilitation support. As a sole proprietor or partner, you may be required to register or strongly benefit from doing so. As soon as you bring on any workers (including subcontractors in some situations), registration is mandatory.

The Scenario Nobody Wants to Think About

You're working independently. You haven't registered yet. You fall off a ladder, a roof, a trench. You're injured seriously enough to be off work for weeks. Without WorkSafeBC coverage: no wage replacement. Your medical costs are covered by MSP for treatment, but anything beyond that; rehab, specialist visits, income while you recover, is on you. If you can't work, you don't earn. Your fixed costs don't stop. That's not a hypothetical. It's the situation a significant number of BC tradespeople find themselves in every year.

The Subcontractor Situation

Here's the one that surprises most people: if you're hiring subcontractors and they aren't WorkSafe registered, you may be liable for their coverage. If a sub you hired gets injured on your job site and they weren't registered, WorkSafeBC can come after you. Always confirm WorkSafe registration for any sub before they set foot on your site. Get their account number and verify it. This is not bureaucracy it's protection.

The Cost

WorkSafeBC premiums are based on your industry's rate and your assessable earnings. For most independent trades operators, the annual cost is reasonable especially relative to the risk of going without.
